6th May 2002 - Man Recalls Japanese Occupation Experience
58 years ago in 1944, on a period during the Japanese occupation, survivor
Mr Heng Ah saw his Kampong and working mate die horribly at the fate
of the Japanese. "We were all troubled. One of us happened to chance
upon a couple of bottles of beer and we thought it would be a good way
to forget our troubles. That way, we all became drunk and made our way
back home." However on the way back, they encountered some Japanese
soldiers. "We were frightened. Then, my friend Ah Seng found a
warehouse of potatoes and we all ran in to hide behind sacks of potatoes."
The Japanese soldiers entered the warehouse and when they saw no one,
they started poking every sack of potato. "When they poked Ah Seng's
sack, he meowed, pretending to be a cat. "When they poked my sack,
I barked, pretending to be a dog. "When they poked my other friends
sack, sigh, he shouted out "potatoes" and in an instant, was
gone." This tragic story has been sent in to the Museum of Crappy
Experiences and will be showcased sometime in the far future.
